Cant work out if gym membership is cancelled or no

My discovery number is 382141280. In November 2012 my son Ryan was told his Virgin active membership had been cancelled. We tried to phone discovery and were given so many reference numbers to identify this had supposedly been cancelled as we had not cancelled it. Reference numbers 2726483640 and 2734538452.
We were eventually we were told that it was sorted out. Last week my husband received a call from Virgin to say that the membership had lapsed and we would have to pay a re joining fee. How could my son attend gym work outs when Discovery had made the error and cancelled the membership. This is linked to a life policy and now we are in serious doubt as to whether the life policy is still active. I don't feel we should have to pay the joining fee again.
