Software update turns to information wipe

I went to a cellular repair shop this passed Sunday to have a software update done on my Blackberry. I have a few contacts on my BBM, most of which I only have on BBM.
So I took it in and asked the guy to do the software update for me because my messages aren't sending. He told me it can take about 40min and will cost R150, not wanting to lose any of my contacts a asked if if they'd still be there, he assured me they would, but I might lose some images or files on the phone. that was fine by me so I left the phone with him and returned 40min later. He then told me that he checked the phone and it was sending SMS's (which is not what I asked for). I then arranged with him to bring it back the following day for the update.
Once again, taking more than an hour this time, I left the phone with him for the update, still making sure that I won't lose any of contacts, still being assured. After getting home did I only realise that all my information is gone, All my BBM contacts, all my What's app contacts even some of my phonebook contacts. I returned to him this morning to have it sorted out, he tells me he doesn't make back-ups, the information is gone. It's not his problem, it's mine...
