First Car Rental deducts and refunds the amount other rental companies only reserve against your Credit Card for insurance cover, in case something goes wrong.
For a small car (R9, 000 insurance cover) Foreigners are hit twice with a Forex conversion charge of nearly $30 per transaction, and the difference in exchange rate the Rand suffered during the rental period plus a few days.
If a foreign traveler rents a small car from First Car Rental for a single day, it will cost that person more than 3 times the expected price due to this hidden Forex charges. An expected R223.00 rental for one day will result in about R857.00 after factoring in the Forex charges. In stead of renting a small economy car at First Car Rental, you can rent a luxury car at the other companies for the same price or less!!
Complaining about this, resulted in an email explaining the reason why First Car Rental conducts business in this way, to protect them form the "bad" people. In return, they have become the most expensive rental company any Foreigner can choose to rent a car from.
Stay away from First Car Rental, unless if you use a South African Credit Card.!!!
