I am not the first one who experienced the tricky way First car rental rips off foreign customers.
When renting a car First car rental not just reserves an amount for insurance cover, but charges this full amount to your foreign credit card. When returning the car the company takes it's time to refund you for this amount. I had to remind them 5 days after my rental period had ended to credit me back.
Due to Forex charges and currency fluctuations I ended up with extra costs of more than R500 and it turns out that First Car rental is the most expensive company for foreigners to use.
I have spoken to customer service and their reply is simple:
"Mrs Nagtzaam please be advised that due to us billing you in ZAR and refunding you in ZAR less your invoice amount in ZAR we will unfortunately not be refunding you any further as we cannot be held responsible for currency fluctuations.
I would like to sincerely apologise for not being able to assist you with your request and do hope that this will not affect any future dealings with our company"
What do you think First Car rental? Never again and I hope with this message more foreigners will follow!!!
