My mom had an Absa account. She died in 2008 with nothing in her estate but a very small policy of a few thousand Rand. My middle sister was the executor of her will. Not long afterwards my sister was diagnosed with terminal cancer and she died two years ago. My youngest sister and I assumed she had closed the Absa account, only to find out recently that she had not done so (probably as she was so sick). The present balance is R4870 but because the account was not terminated timeously a monthly internet banking fee totalling R1000 was deducted from 2008. I approached Absa with my mom and sisters' death certificates, explained the situation, and asked if they would consider reimbursing this bank charge when I close the account. I was told they would only reimburse R100 of the R1000 deducted! I find it offensive that a banking giant will hold onto R900 of my deceased mothers account when she left so little in the first place!
