DECLINED NEW ACCOUNT

I was very interested in applying for an account, as per request I had my Id as well as a proof of residence.
when I handed my ID document to the consultant, he had went to his manager. Where they had their conversation, I could not hear what was being said, but they had a few giggles. On his return he request a passport or drivers licence, i did not have any of this with me. I required as to why he would need this, he advised me that they could not use my ID document as it is 'damaged'
I had walked out of there feeling as if I were a criminal or... And no new account.
I was extremely disgusted with the way i had been treated.
I am a South African citizen, live and work here all my life.
My 'DAMAGED' was used in December to apply for a R20000.00 which was approved, so WHY can i not open a simple ACCOUNT!?!?!?!
