Change debit order date without notifying

On 2012-11-26 INSURANCE Premium was deducted successfully. Then 2012-12-18 January"s payment was deducted. This was a WEEK before the agreed debit order date of the 25th of each month? but successful. Lucky enough there was money at the time and the order was NOT returned. Then I rest assured and thought that from January all will be well. Not to be...
Apparently for no good reason, as I would find out only three days ago, they did not attempted to deduct my premium on 25/01/2013. There was money available at the time. I was never notified about anything and was under the impression the deduction has done. When receiving my bank Statement last week I looked for the deduction but couldn't't find it. I was worried and phoned. The operator told me I had now been placed on "alternative" deduction date (as per terms and conditions) because my debit order did not go through during October or November? I was never notified or informed about this and even the operator apologised. they now wanted to deduct the 15th. I did not budget for that deduction (15th) I stopped it at bank. But then they deducted on the 16th anyway. Why was it not deducted January? How will I be compensated?
