DEBIT CARD EXPIRY DATE

I have had my account with ABSA for 20 years. ABSA ATM swallowed my debit card yesterday late when I needed cash urgently. Phoned customer service. Told my card had expired(!?) and, despite charging usurious fees, their services do not include early notification by sms or mail or phone to warn that my card was about to expire. Apparently an expiry date is printed on there, but then so is it on my FNB credit card and notwithstanding that, I still get phone calls plus mails plus sms warning from FNB that my card will expire in a month or so. That is one part.
Next part: I thought I'd do the right thing and made an appointment to see the Small Business Manager at ABSA Fourways and explain the problem. (Now that is the same branch where they have 3 tellers serving queues of 30 people over lunchtimes! Go figure!). She was so not interested in my story (and I might add that I was extremely polite and calm throughout) and the only advice she could offer was: "Someone should have told you to check the expiry date when you collected the card 5 years ago". Not: "Oh! I am so sorry! What can we do to correct this problem or assist to resolve it? "
