Can't get debit order stopped

I have had a very bad experience with a particular service provider this year. This company has consistently taken too much money from my account regarding my debit order, and has still not refunded me the full amount due to me.
As a result, I want to stop the debit order that I have with them, but surprisingly this does not seem possible... FNB tells me that there is no guarantee that they will not take the money from my account because even if I stop the debit order, they may change the reference number and thereby still get the money.
Also, there is no guarantee that I will be able to get it reversed. I therefore would like to know what on earth I can do, as it seems I do not have control over my own money. Regarding the service provider, after being assured that I will be refunded several times, I am now sick and tired of having to deal with all this unnecessary admin -- the debit order 'cannot' be stopped from their side because they put their debit orders through weeks in advance.
I personally think that this is unfair and highly unacceptable... how can I not control who does/does not take money from my account?
So tell me, FNB... How on earth can you help me?!?!
