Unreadable SMS's and inconsistencies

I received an SMS to insert a one time password for my online credit card transaction. However the SMS said "insert c49fdc40.09:11 2013-10-14". Where was the password supposed to end? Another one did no better (insert af053307. 09:09 2013-10-14 - the "af" was in black whilst the rest was in blue!!!). Needless to say neither was accepted online. I tried for 30 mins this morning and again this afternoon but nobody was able to help. It would be so useful if it was stated how many characters were to be used.

I then tried again hoping that it was a temporary lapse. This time the transaction went through without asking me for a one time password. How can this be?
