I opened an account with Lubners Arcadia in 2011, which at the moment had just been acquired by African bank. My preference was to pay by debit order, because I travel a lot and spend long periods of time outside of South Africa. I communicated this to the sales person. After a while I noticed no amounts going off my account and several voice messages on my phone indicated that my account would be handed over to the collectors. I went to the shop and made a few payments but insisted that a debit order be instituted. The debit order was not instituted and the calls continued. A trip to the shop was futile because it was not there anymore (something common with Lubners). Eventually the debits started. However, I have had a few credit applications declined on grounds of an "unpaid African bank account". I have tried a few times to contact African bank but their customer services department I must say is probably the worst I have experienced! Either that or their systems are terribly faulty. None of them was able to tell me what the problem or simply the status of my account. I went to a branch to give them my new contact details but they still call my next of kin.
