Absa
Debit card life expectancy for eternity

I opened an ABSA Silver Student account during 2000. Going on 13 years being a loyal ABSA client; my initial debit card which was issued to me (still without a micro chip);is starting to show extreme signs of wear and tear to the extent that it sometimes doesn't want to function properly on ATMs as well as point-of-sale card swipes. In addition to that ABSA upgraded my account to the Gold package after the completion of my studies. The only benefit from this was ABSA earning more bank charges monthly since on enquiry like when I can expect my new Gold debit card; they said it can only be issued with an additional fee to my account for a lost/new bank card. I strongly feel that ABSA's should reassess their attitude that an initial debit card (especially without chips) should have a life expectancy for eternity in this electronic age! Promise that if I have to pay R171 for a replacement card once in 13 years; I would rather open a new account with a different bank institution & get my innitial debit card for free again.
