System unable to upgrade account

When I found out that I was being overcharged on transaction fees on my Cheque account (May 2013), I got advised to take the new Value bundle product.

On the first occasion, I went to the Claremont branch and spoke to a salesman, he attempted to upgrade my account but the system did not allow him. He took my cell number and told me that he would phone me in the same week to complete my upgrade. No phone-call, & a month passes and I go to the Wynberg ABSA branch to see if the upgrade was done, it was not! No problem, I will just sit in and wait for another consultant to upgrade my account to the value bundle.

45min later I am told that the system is unable to upgrade my Cheque account, that I will have to close my current Cheque account, & open a brand new value bundle Cheque account (with new account numbers!!). Impact: i have to go and change all other accounts stating my new account number.

That's the same as going to a new bank and opening a new account with them, i am sure there will be cheaper options out there. I will await response before venturing that route. Tnx, Zunaid
