Cheque account and billings misleading

I opened my Absa accoumt last year. Early this year someone at promenade asked why dont I upgrade to a cheque account. I thought why not... After using it for a couple of months I noticed the bank charges were extremely high and decided to have my salary deposited into another bank account but wanted to keep the absa account as I get money via western union now and then. End of June a consultant called me telling me that I owe the bank over R200 in bank fees and if I want to close the account it would cost me almost R500. And if I do t it would reflect on my credit record wich is totally ridiculous. When I opened the cheque account nobody told me this would happen and they do not give you any papers with this information on.
