Unable to assist customer in need

I am currently holding an American express Blue credit card, i was unemployed for close to 5 months thus became financially unstable and exhausted my credit card. i am currently employed and have actually received an increase in income, to get back onto my feet i sent an email to american express enquiring about increasing my limit so i can close the other debts and centralise them, i received no reponse. today i call them and only telephonically (call reference 62736422) they tell me they cant help me because my account is in arrears.

What happened to assisting your loyal customers when in need? i have had a good record with them until recently yet when i cry out for assistance they cant help...
