International roaming

Before I left for America I was told that my South African sim card will work fine without any issues.
When I landed my roaming does not work at all. I cannot receive any SMS's or phone calls on my South African number. I have been forced to get a US sim card.
I am spending an extended period overseas and I cannot use my South African sim card. This is after I was promised by the MTN call center that I wouldn't have a problem
