Contract cancellation

My 24 month contract ended and went on to month-to-month basis. I was then out of a job and called in to cancel and was told because I was in areas at the time I couldn't cancel. I explained that I was now (then) unemployed and would not be able to pay the outstanding balance or future installments.
I have struggled for the past 4 months to be assisted but no-one from MTN is willing to help.
How do you bill me for a service that I am not using and am not able to afford.
I am not willing to pay for anything after requesting a cancellation.
