Cancellation fees for what when contract is done

I had a contract with virgin via dicovry medical aid, I got retrenched last year and decided to cancel my contract with virgin as I could no longer afford it. Then I was told not to cancel but to freeze the account for 4months and I might have a job by then and will afford to pay. Yesterday I phoned to cancel completely as my 4months is up this month and I'm still unemployed and they tell me I have to pay a cancellation fee, how the do I pay a fee for cancellation when this has been a month to month member ship, my actual contract expired two years ago and how the do I pay for a cancellation fee when I'm unemployed for the last 5months?? And this cancellation fee was never ever communicated with me when I agreed on the freeze.
