Completely unreasonable process for refund!!

On Saturday I purchased a cellphone cover on my debit card as a Christmas gift. I then found out that it was the wrong cover. I returned to the store this morning, and checked to see whether they had the right cover for an exchange. They did not. I asked for a refund, presenting my till slip. I was told I needed to get a bank statement to prove my details. I have never heard of another retailer demanding this. I believe it is in contravention of the Consumer Protection Act. I travelled all the way home again, fetched my ID, and came all the way back. I waited in a queue for 40 mins to get my bank statement. Finally, I headed back to the store, where they retained my bank statement (a violation of my privacy and sensitive financial details). I was then informed that my refund would take up to 14 working days to go through. Never mind the fact that I am a student, and that the money will be sorely missed. Or the fact that I am now unable to purchase the item I need, and probably won't get this money to do so in time for Christmas. I am completely outraged, and will never give this company business again. They are quick to take your money, but woe for anyone who purchases incorrectly!
