Repair on a 2 week old Blackberry

On the 7/10/11 I took out a new contract with Vodacom with a Blackberry 9720. 2 weeks later it did not want to charge, I retried with by previous charger to no avail. I took it to the S-Wes Vodacare whom informed met that the charger port was damaged and sent it to JHB. 10 days later I got a call from JHB Vodacom repairs informing me that I broke the charger port and its going to cots me R1700.00 to repair. Surely for a brand new phone this is outrages. To cancel the contract is going to cost me twice as much. So currently I am paying for a brand new phone that I don't have that Vodacom does not want to fix and or assist. As a 20year loyal customer I found this highly upsetting. Surely as an adult woman I know how to operate a charger and surely this must be a factory default... Most frustrating and highly upsetting. Please help!!!
