Cell Phone Sold on False Pretences

A couple of weeks ago my wife went to Vodacom to get help in loading Whatsapp on her cell phone. As the phone was not compatible they sold her another. She signed for it Friday 13-9-2013. It turned out that the Nokia Asha 203 they sold her is also not compatible but they promised it was. The salesman told her its a new phone and Whatsapp would soon be available. Its actually was launched in Feb 2012. She went back Sunday 15-9-2013 but had to go in yesterday to speak to the manager (Anine). Today Vodacom head office phoned her to say sorry but she is locked into the 2 year contract. I guess because Whatsapp competes with Vodacom they are just not interested in helping. She wants to upgrade to a Galaxy S3 but Vodacom says impossible. Can anyone help? I thought that under common law she has 7 days to return the phone (and upgrade it).
