Expiry of fixed term contracts

Maybe i dont understand this. my contract with virgin mobile expired in April 2012 and i cancelled my debit order from the 1st of June 2012. subsequenty to this i am now supposed to be indebted to them, as i did not cancel my contract in writting. however, it is my understanding that they also have a duty to have notified me not less than 40days, before the expiry date of the contract in writting or any recordable form of the impending expiry date. i have requested proof of such notification, which they still have not provided, does this mean that i am indebted to them regardless of my contract having expired.
