Damaged contract cell phone

I bought a cell phone at MTN with a 24 month contract and it gave me problems within three month it was on repair. It came back and it started freezing and it was hot when i charge it, I took it back again and they told me it needs software update, while it had the latest software.. My problem became bigger every time i used the phone (Sony Mini Exparia) I was not receiving my Data bundle ever since i signed the contract with MTN. so i went back and the consultant {Faith} told me my contract was standard which i didn't understand what she meant. I decided to stop the debit order from running into my account and the now calling me telling im owing them, where by I asked them to stop the contract because i don't have a cell phone to use, but the manager refused. she told me to pay them a total due of R717.00 so they will help me.. which is one thing i can't do cause i need a phone so i can pay the contract.. please assist me with any help.
