Activating a sim card is a mission

I ordered a new phone from mtn which was delivered last week Wednesday. I called the same day to get the card activated, i was promised that it will be activated within 2 -24hrs. This was not done I called again on Friday the lady at first said the card was not ricad and that I had to go to an mtn shop. I questioned this because I ordered the phone via phone and they took the copy of Id and proof of residence. She changed her mind and said she will send a query to activation and the card should be fine in 24hrs. That did not happen I called yesterday and was told that the activation people do not work on weekends. I called this morning their systems are offline. Never thought avtivating a sim card can be such a mission.
