Unable to use cell abroad after registering for ro

I called the mtn call centre 3 times before departing to thailand to enquiry about sms roaming as i was leaving my young son behind and needed to be in contact with him and the sitter. i was told to enter a code 2 hours before departure which i did. i have now been in bangkok for 3 days and am unable to get any sms thru to my son. i have received sms from the bank and sales sms... but cant send. why cant i send sms??? / i need this facility badly. I have even linked to the hotels wifi as i was also advised i could use whatsapp... i am unable to do this as well. very frusted at the moment. PLEASE HELP, i have also tried by connecting to the local cell companys as per my cell allows me and i still cant use my cell.
