I buy a 60 day data bundle from MTN which reduces the per MB charge by about a factor of 15. MTN makes no effort to warn me of the expiry date for the data bundle and I have gone over the limit racking up R100s in extra charges. I have asked MTN if they can send me an SMS to warn me that the bundle has expired (or is about to) and that out-of-bundle rates will apply but they say it is not possible.
MTN's regard for me as a customer is poor. They treat me merely as an opportunity to overcharge and gouge. Of course my contract says I will be charged extortionate rates for data if I use it out-of-bundle. I am aware of the contract, but that's not the point. If MTN had any respect for me as a customer they would warn me that they are now charging me 15x the price for the exact same product. I would do this with my customers. That would be good business.
