I was told i still owe them from 5 years ago

I joined the gym as a student in anther branch and went to cancel the contract at this particular branch after i moved to Johannesburg and 5 years later i decide i want to join the gym again and now out of the blue i owe them money i certainly feel i can not owe them since i had cancelled and paid my cancellation fee those years ago. and if i had owed them all these years, although my address changed all else stayed the same, how come Ive never been contacted about this amount. Had i not wanted to join the gym again, when were they going the contact me about that amount. i just feel this is all a money making and i refuse to settle an amount i was never ever contacted about or even black listed for.
