Lack Of Service / Charge for a service never used

I went to Virgin active Bluff looking to enquir about a gym contract, I meet with an employee I think her name was Michelle, She advised me 0of the different contracts available and told me that they where running a promotional offer, I was told that special was ending that Friday so in order to take advantage I had to sign the diocument. But If I decided not to take up contract I could still say no because my membership was not "activated". I never went to Virgin to activate the contract and neither did I use the gym at anytime. There where no debits from virgin and therefore never follow-up up. I Now recieved a letter from MBD Lawyers stating that i am owing R 2061.42. i am furious causing i was not advised fully and never used this facility. I will not make arrangements to pay for a service I never recieved... HELP
