Virgin active hands me over after nearly 5years

Im am very upset after getting a phone call one night from a company called mbd legal collections saying they collecting money owed by me to virgin active of which the contract expired in 2008 already with an amount of R1700 is that possible when as far as i no i paid them via debit every mont. According to the person who called me say theyve been trying to get hold of me since that time why now all of the sudden after so long. Who can assist me with what to do as i am boggled by this situation
