Virgin Active contract not explained

My 18 year old son just completed his matric and is now left out there to the wolves of the world. He visited Virgin Active with a friend and requested to join the Gym on a month to month basis. The person that assisted him at the front desk assured him that it was no problem and completed his registration on the system. He requested to pay in cash every month, and again the lady said that it was no problem, but in order for the system to complete the registration of a new member he had to give a bank account number. This was never discussed with me, as he thought that this number was required only if he did not pay at the end of the month. When I noticed that there was money going off my acc I confronted him and he assured me that the lady said that he can pay on a month to month basis. Due to financial stress I cannot afford to continue with the payment and when I requested a copy of the contract I see that there is a 24 month period. How can Virgin active do this to young unsuspected persons and keep me liable for the of letting my son into a 24 month contract. No person gave him a choice on the duration of a contract.
