Lost R400 - don't know what they're doing!

I received R400 worth of general Foschini group vouchers in 2010, which I had misplaced. When we moved house, I found them again, and went on the day before expiration to go buy something with them. One of the cards was not swiping, so the teller got me to fill in a form to transfer the amount into another card that would swipe. I was told that this would take about 20min, which was no problem, and I went to have a cup of tea while waiting.
On returning there was a problem, and she (the teller) promised to call me back the next day concerning the vouchers. She assured me that I would still be able to use them the next day (on the day of expiry). I did not receive a call the following day, so went back to the store. For some reason the amount still hadn't transferred/teller had to go/not quite sure why, but I would not be able to use the gift card that day. She offered to hold onto the working giftcard too, to make sure that they'd both still be valid when I returned for the replacement card. I then received a phone call the following week, that both cards had expired and I had lost my money.
If it weren't for the lack of knowledge, I could at least have spent one of them!
