Today I walked into the newly opened Tekkie Town Factory Shop next to Checkers with over R1000 to spend. I had with me my laptop backpack (slung over both shoulders and on my back) containing extremely valuable computer equipment and my wallet, phone etc.
I was browsing for a pair of new trainers when I was approached by a member of staff who told me that I must leave my bag at the front of the store at the orders of the store manager. I explained to her very firmly that I would do no such thing and told her to tell her manager that she had lost me as a customer.
I was the only customer in the store, which incidentally is not a big place at all. There were at least 5 or 6 members of staff wandering around the store. Even if it had been my intention to (which it certainly wasn't) the odds would have been stacked against me from the start. I refuse to be treated with suspicion and like a criminal when I was actually coming to purchase something. I'm certainly not going to leave my valuable property with somebody I don't know just to allay the fears of the manager.
A woman would never be expected to leave her handbag with somebody and the same goes here.
