Failure to exchange faulty merchandise

I purchased a hoover vacuum cleaner from game three weeks ago. The vacuum cleaner promptly broke and I returned it as I would have either liked a replacement or a refund. I had not kept my receipt as I would be overwhelmed in scrap paper if I was to keep all my receipts and one does not expect a product to fail within 3 weeks.

The staff were unacceptably rude and unhelpful and made me feel like I was in the wrong when they refused to exchange my vacuum cleaner and said it had to be sent to the supplier for reparations. The consumer protection act clearly states that one has the right to return faulty merchandise to the place of purchase within the guarantee timeframe and either be refunded or supplied with a replacement. Im sure the guarantee period is not 3 weeks.

Very disappointing treatment and practices from a store that is a household name and an infringement on my rights as a consumer.
