Outstanding balance enquiry

I had 2 accounts with the above mentioned retailer which according to my understanding, was settled in 2010. My account was held at Edenvale and when I wanted to close the account, I called my branch and was qouted the settlement amount was and I went to my nearest branch and settled it.

I have recently been harassed by MBD to pay an amount of around R900 and when I called they told me that the account was handed over to them in April with an outstanding amount of R667.47.

MBD referred me to Russells and Rusells told me that the account was "sold" to Maravedi Credit Solutions and they could no longer access any details on the account and they referred me to Maravedi and still they could not assist.

I have no recollection of any statement from Russells informing me or demanding any outstanding payment during that period until MBD contacted me. I am not happy about paying an amount which of course includes interest and legal costs that I knew nothing about. Had Russells informed me then that I owed them I would've paid this money without all these additional charges and now they are giving me the run around.

Why did it take them almost 3 years to realise that I still owed them?
