Debit order disaste

I requested my debit order be changed to the 27th in November last year. Until now everything went smooth but all of a sudden at the end of last month they tried to deduct on the 29th. There was still money in my account, however, they only tried to deduct late in the day, by which time I had already cleared my account. Why did they then not deduct on the 26th, or on the Saturday, the 27th? This resulted in an enormous bank charge for the unpaid debit. Queries to ADT to get this resolved remain unanswered and when I requested a copy of my contract I got an illegible scanned version. Please resolve this immediately. This is extremely bad customer service.
