Why have a self-service facility if it never works

Whenever I go to the movies, I book my tickets online and collect at the self-service terminals, for the purpose of avoiding the long queues at the teller. Recently, whenever I have gone to NuMetro in Canal Walk, the self service terminals are never working so you cannot collect your pre-booked tickets.
The staff are not very helpful, in that when you ask for assistance, all they can tell you is to join the queue and no one seems to be doing anything about repairing the machines. What is the point then of the self-service terminals and the online booking facility, if you have to join the queue anyway and have to be served by incompetent staff?
