On 23 December 2013 we had a breakdown due to gearbox problems and after the festive season we were advised to tow the car to Gearbox and Diff Centre East London at huge cost. We were told that they would have the required part. Chris, an employee informed us that we had to pay a upfront fee of approx R6000.00 which included the removal of the gearbox as well as the quotation. We were charged R1125.00 just for the quotation!! After more than a week we were then informed that in fact they did not have the part and that if he should source the part and complete the job the cost would escalate from an initial R17000.00 to now R28000.00, excluding the R6000.00 we already paid totalling to nearly R35000.00. When we enquired this fee he became sarcastic and defensive and told us to remove the car as it is "in his way". We are pensioners and cannot afford these charges. We will now have to pay anothetr service provider to tow and fix the car. We are of the opinion that Chris has not delivered the service as required by the motor vehicle industry and therefore we plan to take this matter up with the Ombudsman to prevent future abuse of consumers.
