I am appalled!
Received two manifests (parcels) from overseas this afternoon - both valued at $10 / R102. On the one I was charged R33.58 custom fees and the other was R56.66. Both parcels were for the exact same thing - kiddies novelty items (toy rings if you must have the detail). The higher manifest was charged as "of base metal clad with precious metal".
How on earth can you charge a customer 56% of the parcel value??? I questioned the staff at the post office and they said that nothing can be done about it! Disgusting!
In the past I was charged for "motorised watercraft" for beads (craft), and another parcel was charged as "precious metal" because there was a staple on the envelope (no other metal in sight)!
I guess the parcel contents are valued or charged depending on how "educated" the individual is who is assessing the parcel!
