Medi-Clinic
Excessive Emergency Consultation Fee

My girlfriend suspected she had a UTI. We went to the above named hospital later yesterday afternoon. We were told by the receptionist that the consultation fee will be R 560. We waited for an hour and a half before the doctor on duty saw my girlfriend, Irina Ulianitski. The consultation was about 10 minutes. She supplied the doctor with a urine sample. The sample was not deemed necessary to be sent for testing. She was given a prescription for medication at the pharmacy. When we had to pay the costs had escalated to R 948, 00. When we questioned this at reception the doctor and the receptionist explained to us that this was due to the emergency facility being available and the fact that according to their points system the condition my girlfriend complained of necessitated such a high fee. I do not think that it is fair and reasonable that such a high fee is charged for such a short consultation basically confirming what the patient suspected and after waiting for such a long time. When we wanted to buy the medicine at the pharmacy we were told that it had closed at one o'clock already.
We were most certainly exploited by this hospital and their fee structure.
