Torga Optical
Incorrect Prescription and Patient Confidentiality Broken

Torga Optical - Carlswald.

Went to get an eye test to get glasses if required but solely to take a letter to take when going to book my learners licence. Long distance sight is slipping a little. But I solely went because I needed a letter to book my learners. Went in and she was slap dash with the test on a Sunday. And said my eyes were bad. I was shocked. Even when she was doing the test she said ja ja that's fine when switching the lights on when I was battling to read some letters. I thought nothing of it as I trusted her opinion as she is the qualified person here. She asked me to come back for the letter a couple days before going to book my licence. My family suggested I go to this branch as they all do and trust her. She broke patient confidentiality by informing my grandfather, father and sister just how bad my eyes were. Anyway about 2 weeks later I went back to collect my glasses as I received a notification SMS they were ready to be collected. I went in, the women who tested my eyes was not in but I was helped by someone else. I paid a total of R750 for the test, glasses and lenses (cheapest option as I was not planning on getting glasses initially, just wanted a test and letter).

Anyway when I went to collect the glasses I noticed the left lense looked like the bottom of a glass coke bottle and I could not see a thing when I put them on and ask the chap behind the desk to speak to the optician and get them to get back to me. I missed many calls from them. Somewhere between 10 - 15 phone calls. But they only left a voicemail message on the one occasion. I called them back and spoke to the same chap again, I explained that my eyes were incorrectly tested, my client confidentiality was broken and I did not trust her judgement. This was just before Christmas 2013. I then went on to request that they ship those glasses to a different branch and they pay for the new test and new lenses. He was unsure how that would work and I requested he sort out in the new year after chrismas. January 2014 came and went. No phone calls or missed calls or voicemail messages from them. I then got a notification message saying my glasses where ready to be collected. I was VERY cross. And thought no... I am going to wait for them to call me. Nothing, not contacted. No messages, no missed calls.

I went on to go book my learners and was so worried I wouldn't pass the eye tests. What do you know, I passed the licensing department eye test with flying colors. This made me even more cross and confirmed my thoughts from the beginning that there was nothing wrong with my eyes to begin with.

I went into Torga Optical today and again the optician wasn't in and was asked to come back later. I did. When I confronted her about confidentiality being broke. She said my dad asked how my eyes were and she to, d my sister on another occasion that I needed to collect the glasses as she was worried that I needed them. I am married with 2 children, she is talking about my prescription outside of my immediate family (which is my husband and my children). I then told her I don't get headaches or anything that I got a tests to get a letter to book my learners and she mysteriously knew nothing about that. She said she would retest my eyes, which I definitely declined as I do not trust her with my eyes, not the slightest bit. These are my eyes and she could've messed them up. I requested a refund and she said no. I informed her I would take this further and she did not care at all and carried on with business as usual.

Surely this is wrong. I am R750 out of pocket and do not have the glasses (which I don't need). She said, when did you get your eyes professionally tested... But surely the licensing department is one of the hardest eye tests to pass. I am confused. Please share some light and also comment on whether I can take legal action. I mean, SHE COULD'VE RUINED MY EYES! The ony pair I have :(
