I recommended this backpackers to my friend for her stay in Cape town, so we made an online reservation for her. While booking in, the girl at the counter (a foreigner) asked for her passport, to which my friend replied: I have my South African ID document and drivers license. The girl then said that, that won't work, as it is their policy to only accept passports. I then asked her to call her manager, which she wasn't to keen on doing, as he was taking a nap. After insisting on her calling her manager, her manager (another foreigner) came down telling us that it is impossible. I then told him that I have stayed in this backpackers last year July and only showed my ID at that stage, which he replied to in a very arrogant manner: So if I look in this visitor's book, will I find you here? I then provided him with the exact date. He found my name and quietly closed the book, not willing to admit he was wrong. I was absolutely blown away by this absurd rule. I told him that people that haven't traveled abroad, would not have a passport, therefor not all SA citizens will have passports, cause there weren't a need for it.
