My fiance was admitted today for surgery at this hospital. Post operatively he was transferred to another ward, he reported that on transfer his intravenous administration line was damaged and they later realised that it was leaking from a puncture hole. He reported this at about 16:00. The nurse simply stopped the drip and said that they will come to replace the line. At 19:00 we arrived to visit him, where I once again asked for assistance with the drip. He requested medication for nausea from 3 people entering the room to cancel the bell, one actually said that they will only come after handover. Surely patient comfort and service should be first priority. At 21:45 I phoned to wish him a peaceful nights rest. He informed me that the IV line had still not been changed. I immediately phoned the ward and spoke to the sister on duty who, only after I complained, assured me she will do it immediately. I am a Registered Nurse in a ICU setting myself. This is not acceptable. Phlebitis and postoperative infection is a major concern after his extensive surgery. He is also on a PCA pump and IV antibiotics so an patent IV line is of utmost importance. Very disappointed!!
