Our weekend stay at Gowrie Farm Golf Lodge was a huge disappointment. The place is advertised as a 4star rating. We arrived at 6:30pm, collected our keys at the gate as instructed then were on our own.
Breakfast was a golfers breakfast, no hot water the following night. A note to say that Eskom was shutting off power the following day (for major line work it turns out). No hot water that morning. Return after lunch and find the room not made up and no one around. After raising we manage to get the "manager" to come over (he works at another site) and have the room made up. Not before being told that we had left it in a mess and that's why they hadn't cleaned it up. The "mess" was the unmade bed and the un-cleaned waste baskets and bathroom. That is what we pay for - YOUR service!
The owner gives us the macho spiel about this is Africa and what can we do? (No electricity, no staff, no kitchen facilities, no candles...). Well, in Johannesburg we have diesel generators as back-up; because this is Africa. We did get moved to a "suite" as a token - this was the same as the room that we were in, but about 2m2 larger. Still no electricity, mid winter, no candles etc.
