Authorisation Number Needed to see speciallist

My mother - Magriet Howard (67) has lung cancer and has broken her hip. She has to stay in bed most of the time and therefore cannot do much. She used to love reading the Huisgenoot on a weekly basis but since December she has been battling to read, I even bought her glasses from Clicks and this magnifying reader from Verimark. She still could not read, i therefore took her to the optometrist to have her eyes tested hoping they could give her glasses to read. but to her dissappointment they told her that she has Cataracs. The optometrist referred us to a specialist but we need an authorisation number to see the him. we have contacted the medical aid and gave them all the information they need. It has been almost over a week ago that Discovery told us that they would get back to us with an authorisation number. Two days ago we recieved a message saying that Discovery has sent the request through and still need to investigate. In the meantime my mom is getting really frustrated as she cannot read or do anything. What is there to investigate, my mom needs to see the specialist in order for them to remeove the cataracs. Why is it taking so long to get authorisation.
