Warnings about Lenovo warrantees

I always believed that upgrading a warantee provides the safety of getting a system up and running again within a day or so, at no expense and minimal hassle. When a 3-year-old hard disk started failing Acer, for example, collected my machine and delivered a fully restored system to me the next day. I didn't even have to use my backups.

Having encountered the same problem with a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge less than 1 year old, here are my warnings to prospective customers:
1. Lenovo will ship you a replacement HD of the same type that is failing, but you will have to do all the work yourself.
2. If your HD crashes before you could make system recovery disks, you will have to PURCHASE recovery disks from Lenovo for R800, despite the fact that you have already paid for the following...

A) Standard 1-year warrantee
B) ThinkPlus extended warrantee
C) Windows OEM license

Another R800? Is Lenovo profiteering from failures of their own warrantee-covered products?

A policy such as this betrays a wider problem with customer service in general. Indeed, when I queried Lenovo months earlier about excessive clicking of the hard disk, they were uninterested.
