I booked a vehicle on line intending to use a debit card as I do not have access to a credit card. Printing the confirmation, point 1 of the "Important notes" states that a debit card is an acceptable form of payment.
On landing in Durban I was asked to present my debit card and complete an authorisation form including my account number which is not the same as the card no. I do not know my acc no. and had no way of accessing it. My offer of cash for an amount almost three times the expected rental charge was declined as was the offer to supply an alternative account no. or a relatives Cr card.
Whilst I understand the company does have procedures that must be adhered to I object in the strongest terms that the ABSOLUTE requirement to supply a bank account number is not mentioned in the same paragraph as the willingness to accept the debit card, the excuse presented that it is "somewhere" in the T&C's (that could not be supplied to me).
The result was that I was not able to rent a vehicle and was told that no alternative arrangements could be considered, how I made my way was implicitly not of concern. I was able to make alternative arrangement with a more professional competitor.
