Debited Mastercard- yet Mastercard not accepted

The money was debited from my account, yet when I arrived there, AVIS did not want to release the car due to my credit card being a Mastercard. I was stranded at Harare airport. Had to spend another R2000 for transportation. Please can you urgently refund my money. This is not acceptable for a company to take customers money. This is a reputational risk and if i am not urgently refunded, I will proceed with Legal actions.

This morning i received the following feedback:
"I would like to confirm the rental agent was unable to release the booked vehicle as the card Avis will only accept American Express and Visa Credit Cards. This is mentioned in the rental conditions which were available to be read before you confirmed the booking on 1st February 2013 and indicated that you accepted, understood and agreed to the terms and conditions of your booking. Bhimchand, I am sorry that we are unable to provide the solution you were hoping for on this occasion and I apologise for any inconvenience caused by this matter."

So where does it leave the money taken from my account? Will I not be re-imbursed?
Why did they take the money in the first place?
