When I collected my rental vehicle, I noticed the fuel gauge showed it was not full. I took a picture on my cel and mentioned it to the attendant who said it was a faulty gauge.

Just before I returned the vehicle I filled it up and when I returned took another picture - showing the gauge on 100% - and showed the same attendant. Pointing out it was the second time I rented and the tank was not full on collection.

Much to my dismay I received the invoice a few days later showing a fuel charge of R95! When I then visited the office they said the car was not full - I showed them the 2 pictures and the attendant verified the tank was full on return. They showed me their receipt as proof that the car had to be filled up, but their receipt had 50km additional milage! No one could understand why I was upset, or that they could not charge me for the trip they had to do to their head office before they filled up!

Avis simply cannot charge me for fuel they used - I have photographic proof of the fuel gauge and odometer, and their refill receipt. Avis - trying harder - to rip the customer off!
