Don't deliver per their own schedule

I ordered a package from Cape Town, it was collected on the 13th Dec by Fastway Couriers.
I've been tracking the package everyday to ensure that I'm at home when they deliver the item.
This morning I checked and it said 'The parcel was received by the Courier and has been scanned in to his/her vehicle ready for delivery on today's scheduled run'
At 17:45 I called to find out where my package is as I've been waiting all day while I have Christmas shopping to do. I was told that they had too many packages and he (the manager) didn't have a crystal ball to see what would happen during the day and I should've called earlier. What would it help if I called earlier? They apparently had too many packages in any way. Should each person call to receive their package?
If it's on their schedule, should they not deliver? Now I have to spend another day at home waiting for them just in case they deliver. What if they have too many packages tomorrow?
The manager is absolutely useless! My package would've been delivered earlier if I used the Post Office!
Perhaps they should get someone who knows how to work logistics better! or get a better manager!
