I booked and pre-paid a rental car (BMW 320i) from the 28/08/13 to 31/08/13. I pre-paid for 3 days. I returned the vehicle all in order and expected an additional fuel charge for about 17 litres against my credit card but no more. I was shocked when Avis debited me with R1080.16 extra. I thought this was excessive for fuel, but on enqiury it was a full day's charge because I bought the vehicle back just 4 minutes outside their grace period time. I complained that this was unreasonable and would accept a "late return" levy, but not a full day's charge for being just 4 minutes late! In response to my query, Avis credited me with about R100 fuel overcharge, which was nice but not my query - just their admission to the fact that they overcharged me for fuel! My complaint is the unfair practice of charging a full day's rental for being just 4 minutes late with the car. What happended to Treating Customers Fairly? I will not rent from Avis again. Let them keep the extra money, as they will lose out on future business from me worth a lot more than this short term gain. I'm not a "big" customer, only renting 2 or 3 times a year, but it's all going elsewhere!
